Getting Your Korean Transport Card

When traveling in Korea, there is big chance that you will rely on the public transport system. Public transport in Korea is very well integrated and connected. You will observe the integration especially when you transfer between subway lines, from subway to bus or vice versa, and between city buses. On the connectivity side, all major cities and even small villages in Korea are accessible through the public transport system.

As a traveler, the best way to pay for your public transport fares is by using a prepaid transport card. There are several brands of transport cards and among the popular ones include T-Money Card, WOWPASS Card, NAMANE Card, and Climate Card.

T-Money Card

T-Money can be said as the most popular prepaid transportation card. You can use T-Money card when paying for metro, bus, taxi rides, or public bikes. T-Money card can also be used as a payment card when buying small items at convenience stores. However, the card does not have a chip, which means that it cannot be used to pay bills at cafes, restaurants, shopping malls, or other bigger establishments that only have IC card readers.

You can buy T-money card at local convenience stores (GS25, Seven Eleven, Mini Stop) after you arrive in Korea. Normal price is KRW 4,000. You can also buy T-money card before your departure and pick up the card at Incheon Airport.

To add balance to a T-Money card, you can do so at convenience stores (GS25, Seven Eleven, Mini Stop) or use the ticket machines available at every subway / metro station. Amount for your balance top-up is in the multiple of KRW 1,000 and you should pay for balance top-up in cash.

WOWPASS Card

WOWPASS card is a hybrid card that serves as both a transport card and a payment card. This means that besides using the card to pay for transportation rides, you can also use it when shopping at any cafes, restaurants, shops, stores, and other establishments with card readers. If you plan to do a lot of shopping in Korea, this card is an good option for you.

You can buy WOWPASS card voucher before your departure to Korea. As you arrive at Incheon Airport, you can redeem the voucher at the WOWPASS kiosk located in the arrival hall of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

To add balance to your WOWPASS card, use any of the WOWPASS kiosks. You can find WOWPASS kiosks in popular tourist spots in Korea. Payment should be made in cash.

NAMANE Card

NAMANE card is another hybrid card. Similar with WOWPASS card, this card can also be used as a payment card at cafes, restaurants, shops, and other places with card readers. NAMANE card has a unique feature, which is customized card design. So, if you want to have a custom transportation card as a souvenir from your visit to Korea, this is the right card for you.

You can buy NAMANE card voucher before your departure to Korea. As you arrive at Incheon Airport, you can redeem the voucher at the NAMANE kiosk in front of CU convenient store in the arrival hall at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

To add balance to your NAMANE card, use NAMANE kiosk. Climate Card

Climate card is a special transportation card issued by Seoul metropolitan government that offers unlimited public transport rides in Seoul (bus, metro, and bike) for a certain period of time with a one-time fare. However, note that this card will not work outside of Seoul. You also cannot use Climate card as a payment card. This card is to be used only for paying for your transportation rides in Seoul.

Transport Options from Incheon Airport to Myeongdong

At Incheon Airport, your flight may arrive either at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. For each terminal, you will have the same number of transport options that you can choose. The difference is on the location where you take your transport option of choice.

After you arrive at Seoul Station, exit the AREX station and walk to the subway station. Transfer to Seoul metro subway line 4 (cloud blue line) bound to Jinjeop (진접) and get off the train at Myeongdong Station (2 stations from Seoul Station).

Incheon Airport to Myeongdong by Airport Limousine Bus

Airport Limousine Bus number 6001, 6015, and 6701 get to Myeongdong from Incheon Airport. Bus 6001 and 6015 are operated by Airport Limousine Co. Ltd. company while bus 6701 is from KAL Co. Ltd company. If you take a bus from Terminal 1, the bus is located outside of the Terminal 1 building on the first floor. When taking a bus from Terminal 2, the bus station is located on the B1 floor.

How to get an airport limousine bus to Myeongdong at Incheon Airport:
Terminal 1: From arrival hall on the first floor, exit through Gate 5. Go to bay 5B-4 for bus 6001, bay 5B-2 for bus 6015, and bay 3B for bus 6701.

You can buy the airport limousine bus ticket onsite from the ticket machines or ticket offices at each terminal. Payment can be made by card or cash.
