Lounge Types Revisited
If you have not been aware, airport lounges are not the same. There are several types of lounges and the types vary depending on the criteria used for classification.
Based on how a lounge is run, there are two types of lounges: contract lounge and self-operated lounge. A contract lounge is an airport lounge that is operated by a third party or independent lounge provider that is then contracted to other companies or airlines for shared use. Self-operated lounge, as the the name suggests, is a lounge that is managed and run directly by the lounge provider.
Based on access criteria, airport lounges can be categorized as follows: airline lounge, credit card lounge, membership lounge, and pay-in lounge.
Airline lounge is a lounge that can be accessed by passengers flying the respective airline in the business / first class or passengers with certain level of airline membership status. An airline may self-operate its lounge or use a contract lounge. For an airline-operated lounge, the airline may also grant access to its lounge to passengers from partner airlines in its network. Hence, such airline lounge effectively also becomes an alliance lounge because it’s accessible to passengers from other airlines in the same alliance that the airline is a member of.
Credit card lounge is provided by a credit card issuer and primarily caters to premium credit card holders. American Express (the Centurion Lounge), Chase Bank (Chase Sapphire Lounge by the Club), and Capital One (Capital One Lounge) are examples of credit card issuers that often operate their own lounges. However, there are cases where credit card issuers do not directly operate their lounges and instead partner with membership/pay-in lounge operators to provide lounge access to their premium credit card holders.
Membership lounge is a lounge provided by a company that runs airport lounge membership program. Priority Pass is a popular example of lounge membership that offers the members access to more than 1500 Priority Pass lounges around the world.
Pay-in lounge is operated by company that provides lounge access under pay-per-use model. Visitors pay for access, either through reservation or onsite, every time they intend to access the lounge. Pay-per-use lounge examples include Plaza Premium Group with its Plaza Premium Lounge and Primeclass Lounge.
Incheon Airport Terminal 1 Lounge Map
Incheon Airport consists of three main buildings: Terminal 1, Midfield Concourse, and Terminal 2. The Midfield Concourse (often simply referred to as “Concourse”) can be safely considered part of Terminal 1. This is since passengers who board their flights from Concourse should first do check-in at the counters located in Terminal 1.
All lounges in Incheon Airport Terminal 1 are located in the restricted area of the departure hall. While all lounges are physically located on the fourth floor, their entrances are on the third floor. Passengers who want to access any of the lounges can use elevator or escalator to go up one level to the lounge area.
The locations of all the lounges at Incheon Airport Terminal 1 are shown in the figure below. The map depicts the airport layout with floor plan for the third floor. The locations of the lounges on the fourth floor are then flattened to the same spot on the third floor.

As seen in the map, there are 13 lounges at Incheon Airport Terminal 1 (including Concourse) as of October 2025. We will discuss these lounges in more details in the next section.
