Incheon Airport Terminal 2 was first opened on January 18th, 2018 after five years of construction project started in September 2013. The construction of Terminal 2 itself had been inevitable as Incheon Airport impressively grew in passenger and cargo traffic since its inauguration as the main airport of South Korea on its opening day on March 29th, 2001.
Even though Incheon Airport Terminal 2 had been operating since January 2018, the construction work still continued. Dubbed “Phase 4 Construction Project of Incheon Airport“, the primary goal of the project was to increase overall capacity of Incheon Airport to serve more than 100 million passengers and 6 million tonnes of cargo annually. Such ambitious goal was carried out through expansion of Terminal 2 area by adding 347,000 square meters of space to existing terminal building, construction of 62 passenger aprons and 13 cargo aprons, and construction of one additional runway. The Phase 4 Construction was officially completed on November 29th, 2024. With the completion of Phase 4, Incheon Airport should be capable of handling 1,000 flights daily through its four runways and two passenger terminals.
If you are a frequent visitor to South Korea, you may have noticed that most airlines still operate out of Terminal 1 Incheon Airport. We expect this to change in the near future as the airport authority reorganizes airline counter assignment and optimizes the overall traffic management at the airport. Not only that, we observe that Terminal 2, especially the departure area, has raised the bar on how a modern airport should be designed and cater to international travelers. This potential is currently underutilized since the Terminal 2 still operates below its capacity.

Airline Check-in Counters at Incheon Airport Terminal 2
Check-in counters at Incheon Airport Terminal 2 are located in the departure entrance hall on the departure level (third floor) of the Terminal 2 Building. The entrance hall itself is divided into 13 sections, with each section being assigned a letter as identifier: A to N. This is the same with section arrangement in Terminal 1 that also consists of 13 sections with letter A to N as identifiers.

If it’s your first time to enter the departure entrance hall of Incheon Airport Terminal 2, take a moment to look at your surrounding to appreciate this architectural marvel. The ceiling features white slats laid out to concoct wave-like patterns that can symbolize both the airy atmosphere and the oceanic waves, a subtle hint that the airport is located in an island surrounded by the sea. Expansive LED panels on the wall represent progress, avant-gardism, and affluence. The floor combines the use of granite commonly found in Korean buildings and traditional Korean wood to reflect Korean culture, which at the same time also improves the acoustics and comfort level of the passengers. Overhead curved LED displays are also installed on the counter islands to accentuate on the technological prowess of Korea.
The check-in counter locations are shown in more detail in the check-in counter map below. As can be seen in the map, the letter A to N represent check-in counter sections or zones. Passengers coming from outside enter the check-in area in the entrance hall from any of the 12 available gate entrances. A counter island that houses check-in counters separate two different sections. Counters assigned in the same section (counters with the same letter identifier) are placed on the west and/or east sides of a section. Therefore, a counter island may house counters from two different sections. A maximum of 20 counters can be contained on each longer side of a counter island, a slightly bigger number than the counter island at Terminal 1 that can only host up to 18 counters for each longer side.

As you can see in the check-in counter map above, check-in sections are represented as letters from A to N. There are only 13 sections assigned as the letter I is not used in the section identifier. Interestingly, the letter I is also not used as a section identifier in Terminal 1.
Check-in counter assignment for each section in Terminal 2 is explained as follows.
Section A:
- Korean Air (KE)
Section B:
- Korean Air (KE)
Section C:
- Korean Air (KE)
Section D:
- Korean Air (KE)
Section F:
- Korean Air (KE)
Section H:
- Aeromexico (AM)
- Jin Air (LJ)
Section J:
- China Airlines (CI)
- Garuda Indonesia (GA)
- XiamenAir (MF)
Section K:
- Delta Air Lines (DL)
Section M:
- Air France (AF)
- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL)
Section B, Section F, Section G, and Section L can be used for self bag drop. Passengers who use self bag drop counters should have completed check-in process on any of the self check-in kiosks installed around the check-in sections.

After a passenger completes the check-in process, the passenger will then proceed to the security check area through the security check entrances. There are 2 security check areas at Incheon Airport Terminal 2. Each security check area has 4 entrances. Entrance 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D are the entrances for security check area 1 that leads to departure hall entrance gate 1. Similarly, entrance 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D are the entrances for security check area 2 that leads to departure hall entrance gate 2.

Similar with Terminal 1, passenger queue monitoring panels are installed before each security check entrance. You can watch passenger queues at other security check entrances in real time. This information will be very helpful especially when there is long queue at the security check entrance nearest to your check-in counter.

Alternatively, you can use Smart Pass to expedite the passport check performed at the security check entrance. Download the Smart Pass app to your phone (iOS, Android) and scan your passport and boarding pass. At the security check entrance, you can then use the Smart Pass queue line that is usually shorter than the regular queue line.
