In a long-haul flight, it is not uncommon for you to transfer at another airport and take a connecting flight to your final destination instead of flying directly to your final destination. An airport that provides such connectivity is referred to as a hub airport. Hub airport is used by airlines with hub-and-spoke model to centralize passenger traffic and flight operations. By utilizing hub airports, airlines serve fewer (direct) routes and operate in a more cost-effective manner by taking advantage of the connectivity via the hub airport.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is the main passenger hub for Cathay Pacific (including its affiliate airline Cathay Dragon), Hong Kong Airlines, and HK Express (another affiliate airline of Cathay Pacific). It is also used as layover/stopover point by many other airlines. This signifies the role of Hong Kong airport as one of the major passenger hubs in Asia.
Having to serve millions of passengers every year including passengers in transfer or layover between flights, Hong Kong airport authority has equipped the airport with various facilities and services to present delightful airport experience to passengers. For passengers waiting for departure or their next connecting flight, there are ample spaces with waiting chairs at departure lounges in the concourses. Alternatively, passengers with preference for more private space and better comfort can access airline or premium/paid lounges operated at the airport.
What kind of lounges can be found at Hong Kong airport? We did a small journey scouring the airport to locate and map all the passenger lounges and combined our notes with information that is available online. The result, an elaborate list of Hong Kong airport lounges that we provide for you in the rest of this article.
Airline Lounges vs Credit Card Lounges vs Membership/Pay-in Lounges
An airport lounge is a place at the airport that offers higher degree of comfort compared to that of public airport facilities and services to passengers who meet certain criteria for access. Amenities provided in an airport lounge may include comfortable seats and couches, free food and drinks (including liquor), showers, private meeting rooms, children’s area, WiFi, TV, newspapers & magazines, among others. Each lounge usually has different rules and criteria for guest / visitor access.
Based on the entity that operates the lounge, airlines lounges can be categorized into airline lounge, credit card lounge, and membership/paid lounge.
Airline lounge is operated by an airline, which is mostly a full-service airline. An airline usually operates its own lounge at its hub airport. An airline lounge can be accessed by passengers flying with the airline in the business / first class or passengers with certain level of airline membership. An airline that is a part of an airline network may also grant access to its lounge to passengers from partner airlines in the network. Hence, such airline lounge effectively also becomes an alliance lounge because it’s accessible to passengers from other airlines in the respective alliance / airline network.
Credit card lounge is operated by a credit card issuer and primarily caters to premium credit card holders. American Express (the Centurion Lounge), Chase Bank (Chase Sapphire Lounge by the Club), and Capital One (Capital One Lounge) are examples of credit card issuers that operate their own lounges. However, there are also other credit card issuers that do not directly operate their lounges but instead partnering with membership/paid lounge operators to provide lounge access to their premium credit card holders.
Membership lounge is operated by company that runs airport lounge membership program. Priority Pass is a popular example of lounge membership that offers the members access to more than 1500 Priority Pass lounges around the world.
Pay-in lounge is operated by company that provides lounge access under pay-per-use model. Pay-per-use lounge, examples include Plaza Premium Group with its Plaza Premium Lounge and Primeclass Lounge.
Similar with credit card companies, airlines may also extend partnerships with membership/pay-in lounge operators to provide lounge access to their passengers especially at the airports where the airlines do not operate their own lounges.
Interestingly, you can find all types of airport lounges mentioned above at Hong Kong airport. This showcases the strategic position of Hong Kong airport as a hub airport in Asia Pacific. Furthermore, the variety of the airport lounges presents some flexibility especially for frequent travelers to choose from the wide range of lounge options.
